Specify the desired signal first
Resolution and refresh rate define a bandwidth need.
Add color depth, chroma format, HDR, VRR, and audio return features. Every active device in the chain must support the required combination.
Cable categories are the buying language
Certified cable classes matter more than a numbered marketing phrase.
Choose the certified category required for the signal and verify its label. Expensive materials do not improve an error-free digital picture.
Features negotiate to a common path
Backward compatibility does not create missing features.
A source, receiver, switch, cable, or display can lower the resulting mode. Inspect each link when 4K, high refresh, HDR, or eARC fails.
Treat version labels cautiously
Products may implement selected features.
Use the manufacturer’s supported-format table for the exact input and model. A broad HDMI version badge is not a complete capability statement.
