Streaks, Faded Prints, and Wrong Colors

The printer’s own diagnostic separates ink delivery from everything else.

Every inkjet can print a nozzle check pattern and most lasers a quality page. Gaps or missing colors in the pattern mean an ink-delivery fault; a clean pattern with a bad document means the fault is in settings, the file, or the paper.

Dried ink blocks individual nozzles; cleaning cycles clear most of it.

Run the printer’s cleaning cycle once, wait, and reprint the check pattern. Repeat at most twice; a pattern that will not clear after rest and cleaning usually needs a new cartridge or printhead rather than more cycles, which consume ink.

Draft mode and wrong paper type reduce ink deliberately.

Check the print dialog for draft or economy mode and confirm the paper type matches the sheet actually loaded. Glossy photo paper set as plain paper prints faded and smeared regardless of ink level.

An empty color, a swapped cartridge, or a color profile explains most cases.

A magenta-tinted document often means cyan is empty or clogged; a check pattern shows which channel is missing. Confirm cartridges are seated in the correct slots, then test with a color-managed app switched to printer-managed color.

Repeating marks and gray backgrounds are mechanical, not a file problem.

A vertical line that repeats every page, a ghost image, or a gray background points to the drum, toner, or fuser. Measure the spacing of repeating marks; it identifies which rotating part is scarred and whether a consumable swap fixes it.
